Our Vision and Purpose
Vision: To create a world where lipreading classes are available to all who need them
Purpose: To provide a professional and recognised association for teachers of lipreading to adults, and to work in partnership with others to ensure that everyone challenged by hearing loss has access to lipreading classes and appropriate support
Our Aims
To raise the profile and priority of lipreading, and of those who are qualified to teach it, throughout the UK and beyond.
To generate awareness of the benefits of lipreading, related communication skills and tactics.
To promote understanding of the needs of people with hearing loss who want to use
speech and/or lipreading to communicate.
To always promote continuous professional development so that the highest quality of lipreading teaching is available.
Who are lipreading classes for?
Classes are for anyone who struggles to hear. They are often – and more accurately – called ‘Lipreading and Managing Hearing Loss’ classes.
What your class will coverÂ
In class you will meet others who have similar problems. You will:
- learn more about how to get the best from today’s hi-tech hearing aids
- get information on organisations that can help you
- join in discussions on types of hearing loss and ways of coping
- learn tactics to use in difficult situations
- learn to lipread many different speakers. Everyone speaks differently – this is why we recommend attending classes
- get support from other class members – and much more.
But above all, you will improve the lipreading skills you already have – even if you are not aware of them. This will boost your confidence and allow you to take charge of your own hearing loss.
