‘SAL’ stands for Safeguarding Adults Line
You can call us for anything from straightforward information and advice about the abuse and the safety of the more vulnerable adults in Essex; to the disclosure of a specific concern about your own safety of somebody that you know. Should you wish to report maltreatment of an adult in Essex we will take your concern seriously and ensure that it is investigated appropriately.

Who is vulnerable?
Somebody who is aged 18 years or older and is in need of a form of care because of a mental, physical or learning disability, their age or an illness. Somebody who is unable to take care of themselves or unable to protect themselves from harm.
Are there different types of abuse?
People can be abused in different ways. The different types of abuse that people may suffer are listed below:
- Physical abuse
- Sexual abuse
- Emotional abuse
- Financial abuse
- Neglect
- Discriminatory abuse
- Institutional abuse
Where does abuse happen?
Abuse can occur anywhere. The list below is by no means exhaustive but gives some examples:
- Someone’s own home
- A carer’s home
- Day care
- Residential care
- A nursing home
- Hospital
